Harvesting NW BioEnergy Cooperatives

It's time for NW communities to retain value and build ownership in the emerging bioenergy economy. Rapidly growing interest in farmer and community ownership means there is an urgent need to provide ideas and resources in the sectors of

  • Biodiesel
  • Ethanol
  • Biopower

As these industries mature, so will the needs for feedstock production, processing and distribution — goods and services which cooperative businesses are well-suited to meet.

Why Go Co-op?

The recent influx of private capital into corporate bioenergy plants in our region has meant more absentee ownership in our rural economies. It is time communities throughout the Northwest capture a greater share of this growing industry. Co-ops have a dramatic economic impact at the local level by:

  • Returning profits to members
  • Keeping decision-making local
  • Spending money where its located
  • Borrowing locally
  • Diversifying the local economy

How?

By studying and surveying existing and emerging co-ops in the bioenergy field, the Center will facilitate bioenergy co-op development by:

  • Assessing any obstacles
  • Proposing solutions
  • Identifying opportunities

Expected Outcomes

All findings will be publicly presented in a comprehensive report outlining what opportunities exist and what groups are pursuing them. The Center will be working directly with groups seeking to move forward with co-op bioenergy businesses. Assisting these co-ops develop into more viable and productive ventures will increase the value of their operations and help ensure their future success.
